Dalla penombra del fondo emergono le figure della Vergine, che stringe a sé con tenerezza il Bambino Gesù, e di S. Giuseppe dormiente, appena rischiarati da una luce laterale. Presso la mangiatoia, stanno il bue e l’asino e qualche pastore. In alto, in un cielo notturno, schiere di cori angelici, disposti in ampi cerchi, sovrastano come un’aureola luminosa la scena natalizia. Il dipinto è collocato entro una cornice in legno dorato riccamente intagliata.
Restaurato nel 1853 dal pittore maceratese Giuliani, ha subito un intervento di pulitura nel 1959 presso i Laboratori dei Musei Vaticani e un successivo restauro conservativo nel 2018, nel laboratorio di Tiziana Sorgoni, a Roma.

From the half-light of the background emerge the figures of the Virgin, who tenderly hugs the Child Jesus, and of the sleeping St. Joseph, barely illuminated by a lateral light. At the manger, there are the ox and the donkey and some shepherds. Above, in a night sky, multitudes of angelic choirs, arranged in large circles, dominate the Christmas scene like a luminous halo. The painting is placed within a richly carved gilded wooden frame.

It was restored in 1853 by the Macerata-based painter Giuliani, it underwent a cleaning operation in 1959 at the Laboratories of the Vatican Museums and a subsequent conservative restoration in 2018, in the laboratory of Tiziana Sorgoni, in Rome.
